Alabama’s House of Representatives Pass Jefferson Business License Bill

Alabama’s House voted 15-2 last Wednesday on Bill 664 to give Jefferson County authority to collect a business license tax. Business license taxes will cost anywhere between $25 to $15,000 annually depending on the business type and size.

According to Alabama Trucking Association, “The sponsor of House Bill 664, Rep. Jack Williams, R-Vestavia Hills, said it would raise about $7 million a year and that no business would pay more than $15,000 a year.”

The revenue bought in with the advent of the business license fees is expected to help ease a bit of the county’s budget deficit.

Jefferson County will be allowed to increase business license fees by 5% every five years.

The bill is awaiting the Senate’s approval before it passes.
