Louisiana Business Owners can lose their Licenses for Hiring Illegal Immigrants

In the wake of recent action by state legislatures to combat the influx of illegal immigrants, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal signed a law last Thursday that threatens to revoke the Louisiana business license from anyone found employing illegal immigrants.

A business owner’s first two offenses for hiring illegal immigrants could result in steep monetary fines. The third offense could cause someone to lose their business license for up to a six months period in addition to being hit with a fine up to $2,500. As reported in Numbers USA, “Employers who are found to have knowingly hired illegal aliens face fines for the first two offenses and suspension of their business license for the third offense.”

Business owners are urged come into compliance with the new law by either using the online E-verify program or by keeping copies of legal documents that prove the legal status of their employees.
