Changes Approved for Occupational Tax - Business License Rates in Lilburn

Lilburn council members voted yesterday to update the system used to calculate business license, occupational tax fees. Their old system based licensing cost on the amount of employees a business hired. Council members voted to change to the more popular method of basing a company’s occupational tax on their gross receipts.

This change is expected to generate three times the amount previously collected from business license fees. Whereas the system was bringing in $120,000 in licensing money each year, that amount is projected to increase to an estimated $360,000.

Even with the license fee increases, city officials claim that the prices charged by Lilburn city council are less than their neighboring cities. As City Manager Bill Johnsa said, quoted by Gwinnet Daily Post, “Our class rates are still below Gwinnett County’s, but they are competitive with our sister cities,”
