Court to Decide Future of Unlicensed Greenwood Grocery Store

The owners of Cal’s, a grocery store in the rural Town of Greenwood, will face court charges for operating a business without a license. Co-owners Vincent Cal and Jamisa Fletcher decided to open the store without a license after their request for a Greenwood business license was rejected by town officials because the location of their store was zoned for residential use only.

After leasing the building for a year, and renovating the 160 year old building to an attractive store-front, Vincent decided to open the store even without the requisite license.

“We don’t like being outlaws. We don’t like breaking the law. That’s not the point. The point is we can’t afford $20,000-$30,000 to re-zone it,” Jamisa told a CBS correspondent.

Community support at a recent court hearing for Cal’s has led some town officials to consider waiving the rezoning fees that would allow the store to legally acquire a business license and remain open.

A court decision later this month will settle the future of Greenwood’s only grocery store.
