Crossville may Require Business Permits at Yard Sales

Council members have approved the first reading of an ordinance that would require the purchase of a Crossville business permit by residents conducting yard sales. The explosion of home sales has prompted city officials to propose setting more governmental supervision on vendors conducting yard sales.

Councilman Danny Wyatt looked at neighboring cities for help in drafting the ordinance. Crossville Chronicle lists Bartlett, TN, and Portland, TN, as two of the cities Wyatt based his ordinance on.

If the ordinance would pass, residents would need to abide by certain regulations in order to qualify for the Crossville business permit. For example, vendors would be limited to the number of days and hours they can keep their home sale open, a listing of the type of merchandise sold would have to be submitted for city approval, and sufficient parking for customers will have to be given.

Violators of the yard sale ordinance could be fined $50 a day.

The ordinance will be subject to further approval by council members before it can be passed into a law.
