Flagler County Officers Arrest Unlicensed Peddlers

September 6, 2011

Police officers arrested two non-residents for peddling goods door-to-door without obtaining either a Palm Coast, FL business license or a Flagler County business license.

Historic City News reports that Matthew Tribble, 28 from Portsmouth, VA and Jason Staufenberger, 26 from Jacksonville, FL were selling meat to local residents out of their pick-up truck.

They were spotted by a police officer on Putter Drive in the City of Palm Coast. When asked for a copy of their peddlers licenses they admitted that they didn’t have any sort of Palm Coast business permit. They feigned ignorance, claiming they didn’t know they need one.

Their arguments fell on deaf ears as the deputies arrested the two. After spending the night in prison, Matthew was released on $100 bail while Jason was sentenced to time served.

Residents are asked to be on the lookout for unlicensed peddlers and to report them to the authorities.

“We are working with the city to discourage these unlicensed solicitors,” said Sheriff Donald W. Fleming. “Residents have complained about pushy, abusive home alarm solicitors and they have complained about the interruptions in their day.”

Both a need to increase government funds and complaints by residents has spurred local authorities into action against unlicensed salespeople. Obtaining the necessary business licenses and permits before one starts a business can save one time, money and legal setbacks. The Business License and Permit Electronic Online Library (LAPEL)™ provides business license, permit, and tax registration information and forms covering every state, county, and city in the U.S. easing the licensing process for large corporations as well as small businesses.
