Hazleton City Could More Easily Suspend Business Licenses Now

Hazelton council passed an ordinance which will make losing a business license a penalty to business owners who don’t comply with city regulations.

The Standard Speaker reports the following which could make a business owner lose his license, “if the holder of the license or permit secures a license by misrepresentation, fails to maintain qualifications required by law, engages in fraudulent behavior or misleading advertising, or consents or allows behavior that results in a crime such as drug trafficking or drug possession, committing an act of gross negligence or by allowing "any manner or form" of a public nuisance.”

Additionally, the town won’t issue a new license to anyone who defaulted on city taxes or fees.

Any resident disobeying the above ordinance can face up to $600 a day in fines.

According to Council President James Perry this ordinance is a preventive measure to ensure compliance rather than an outcome of an upsurge in business owner violations of city regulations.
