Illegal Immigration and Business Licenses under Discussion in San Juan

Councilman Derek Reeve proposed an ordinance Tuesday night intended at curbing the hiring of illegal workers. He followed in the footsteps of other states and localities by suggesting the suspension of business licenses from those who knowingly employ illegal immigrants.

The focus of the "San Juan Capistrano Right to Work Act" is to ensure jobs for legal residents by not allowing those positions to be filled by illegal workers.

If caught in violation of the act, business owners will get 10 days to fire their illegal employees. If the business is still found employing illegal workers it will cost it its San Juan Capistrano, CA business license, effectively shutting down the business.

Rob Vardon reports for The Orange County Register, “"It is anticipated this ordinance will have a chilling effect on hiring illegal aliens and (that) enforcement activities will be minimal.”

The act is awaiting approval by council members before it can be passed.
