Kuna may Increase its Current $2.50 Business License Fee

For the pittance amount of $2.50, business owners in Kuna had been able to get a city license and retain that license for life. City council members are suggesting revamping the licensing system and requiring business owners to apply for an annual business license at a cost of around $22 each year.

Council members feel that the current system gives them little information of existing businesses and their compliance with city regulations. By mandating annual license renewals, city officials will be able to keep better track of local businesses.

To finance this system, the city will be forced to increase licensing fees from the minimal $2.50, which barely covers any licensing expenses, to an annual charge of $22. According to deputy city clerk Chris Engels, as quoted by Kuna Melba News, this fee covers, “$8.40 for 20 minutes of staff and equipment time, $10 for 20 minutes of P & Z staff and equipment time, $1.08 for postage, $2 for license material, such as card stock, ink, etc.”

Although it may seem to be a significant fee increase, Engels said that the city’s charge for a business license would still be less than those of neighboring cities who have licensing fees running from $25 to $360.
