Mesa, Arizona to Increase Business License Fees

In an age of rapid computer advancements, The City of Mesa is still using an 18 year old computer system to track business license and tax revenues. In order to raise the necessary funds to acquire a more modern program, city council members suggest raising Mesa, Arizona business license fees.

Acquiring a new business license in Mesa currently costs a mere $30.00 and renewing it costs only $20.00 annually. Suggested hikes in fees stand to increase to more than double the original costs: initial applications at $70.00 and renewals at $50.00.

The mayor, in trying to appease business owners, says that a new computer system will be beneficial to merchants as they will be able to submit licenses and permits electronically. According to azcentral.com council members feel that the system is crucial to city operations because it tracks $255 million a year in license and tax revenues. The city, however, has not yet received universal public approval with some business owners preferring to fill out the applications by hand rather than pay the higher fee. As of yet, no decision has been made by the council.
