Montgomery County sets Farmers Market Business License Regulations

After much discussion between county officials and farmer market operators, guidelines for which vendors require a Montgomery business license have been set.

Licensing regulations differentiate between vendors selling whole or untouched foods and those who sell large-cut, prepared foods. As explained by a PhillyBurbs reporter, “Targeted licensing requirements will allow farmers selling uncut produce or small cut samples at roadside stands or the larger market venues to do business without a license. At the same time, vendors selling large cuts, such as half-watermelons, or fruit salad or other prepared food will need a license.”

Moreover, if vendors will be selling the same type of foods at a number of different events, they can obtain one “mobilized vendor” license that would cover all their sales.

In order to qualify for the license, applicants would have to agree to follow the health departments guidelines in maintaining food safety, such as keeping their stalls clean, their hands washed and the food refrigerated.

Licensed vendors will be subject to periodic inspections by county health officials to ensure their compliance with licensing regulations.
