Opposition Voiced Against New Crest Hill Business License Ordinance

A local business owner voiced his displeasure at the ordinance passed last month that would change the payment schedule for Crest Hill, IL business licenses.

While in the past, business owners paid a one-time fee to obtain their business licenses, Crest Hill alderman changed that to now necessitate annual payments for business license renewals.

The extra cost to local businesses with annual payments is not the only issue that Pete Delaney of Delaney Construction took umbrage at, he is also bothered by the confusing measures in place to determine the licensing fees. According to The Chicago Sun Times, “The council approved an annual fee of $50 for businesses under 5,000 square feet, and $500 for larger businesses.”

Delaney feels that the language is ambiguous and doesn’t clearly state which of a business’s assets are included in the 5,000 square feet. For example, properties used to house storage units or warehouses, or properties in other areas are not mentioned in the new ordinance.
