Orangeburg may Increase Business License Fees

To offset a budget deficit threat caused by state funding cuts, city officials will discuss the possibility of raising Orangeburg business license fees as a means of increasing city revenue. Some of the license fees haven’t been changed in over 20 years.

"We found out we are so far behind on some of the fees we charge on certain things," Orangeburg City Administrator John Yow told a Times and Democrat reporter. "We charge $25 on something where the county or other area governments are charging $220.

Another source of revenue to be discussed at the city council’s July meeting is the collection of business license fees from delinquent payers or businesses who haven’t registered for their licenses at all.

If approved, business license fee increases would go into effect on October 1, 2011, for the city’s new budget year.
