Public Hearing Held to Discuss Possible Missoula City Business License Increases

Missoula City Committee held a public meeting on Monday, May 23, 2011 to hear residents’ opinions on possible business license fee increases.

Current new business licenses and business license renewals cost from $74 to $1,830, based on the amount of people a business employs.

Proposed new business license fees would also be based on the type of business and where the business is located, in addition to the amount of employees.

Moreover, the minimum business license fee will go up to $96.00 for home-based businesses and $120.00 for retail-based businesses.  The fee for renewing a business license, however, will go down.

One contractor in the audience said he is fed up with paying more.

"We're getting to the point where there is going to be a tipping point. We cannot afford to do this in perpetuity," he said, as quoted by NBC.

The only conclusion at the public hearing was that the city committee would continue discussing possible fee changes.
