Rapid City may Change Street Vendor Permit Ordinance

With 10 out of the 12 available Rapid City street vendors’ permits purchased by one vendor, city officials are considering changing the current ordinance to accommodate more sales.

As explained in an earlier article, John Ashley, owner of the Stardust Motel in North Rapid, purchased street vendor permits that would lock up 10 out of the 12 locations available for mobile food vending in Rapid City .

Brady Douglas, co-owner and operator of Phantasy Franks is currently running his food truck on private property. Although he would like to relocate his business to a more populated area, all of the available business permits for those locations were already taken by Ashley.

Council members are looking for ways to amend the vendors permit ordinance in a fair, acceptable fashion for all interested parties. Rapid City Journal reports, “Suggested changes include limiting the number of cart locations one person can amass, setting an expiration date for the location-specific permits and establishing rules for sites that are permitted but go unused. “
