Residents Request Increase to Costa Mesa Maximum Business License Fee

Amongst other suggestions during Tuesday’s budget session, city officials suggested, at the behest of local residents, raising the the ceiling of licensing fees charged to Costa Mesa’s business owners. Residents feel that the $200.00 maximum business license fee is unfair as big businesses don’t have to pay much more than their smaller counterparts.

As the Daily Pilot points out, “a large store like Nordstrom in South Coast Plaza could pay the same business license tax as a mom-and-pop store on the Westside.”

Whereas other cities in Orange County bring in between $2 million to $10 million a year in business license revenue, the City of Costa Mesa brings in a paltry $850,000.00.

Residents will have a chance to vote on possible increases to business license taxes during next year’s elections.
