Salt Lake City Passes Budget that Includes Business License Fee  Increases

Business owners in Salt Lake City will see a 10% increase in licensing fees when applying for their 2012 business licenses. The budget that the Salt Lake City Council passed yesterday, Tuesday June 14, 2011, upped licensing fees as a way of generating funds for the city.

Also included in this year’s budget is the Landlord-Tenant Initiative. As Derek P. Jensen explained in The Salt Lake Tribune, “Under new language, landlords with one and two units will be designated, for the first time, as businesses.” Landlords will be required to pay a $110 base business license fee as well as paying $20 per unit rented out.

The penalty for a landlord who does not register for his business license is $342 per unit.
