San Benito Board Members Discuss Possible Measures to be taken against Unlicensed Food Vendors

San Benito board members met last Tuesday to discuss the proliferation of unlicensed food vendors. Different options were suggested by council members most notably the one by County Counsel Matthew Granger who recommended issuing citations and orders to obtain food licensing permits to anyone operating a food stand without a proper license.

Food sold by unlicensed vendors may not comply with the basics of health regulations and could be a breeding ground for food related illnesses. As Environmental Health Services Manager Vivian Nelson noted, “vendors don't have hand-washing stations, lack training in safe food handling practices and don't note the origin of the produce they are selling,” quoted by Hollister Freelance.

In an effort to combat this issue, the county's Environmental Health Services agency had begun to confiscate food from unlicensed vendors. Supervisor Robert Rivas is afraid that such actions may not be sanctioned by county laws.

Also discussed at the meeting was which city department would have the responsibility of dealing with unlicensed food vendors.
