Town of Davidson Business License Tax to go into Effect July 1, 2011

The Town of Davidson will charge a one-time $40 business license fee to all local businesses. The business license fee was approved by the town board in March and is slated to go into effect July 1, 2011.

Downtown manager Kim Fleming clarified the details of the license tax to business owners at the quarterly Davidson merchants’ meeting last Friday. She explained that the point of the tax is not to raise revenue for the town; rather it is a means for the city to keep a count of the amount of businesses in the city and their locations.  This information is necessary for the police and fire departments.

Fleming also clarified, as quoted in the Davidson News, "The license is not like the 'business privilege licenses' of some other area towns. In those towns, even businesses that make deliveries or serve clients within the towns’ borders must pay a fee."

All new businesses opening up or moving to the Town of Davidson will have to pay the one-time $40 licensing fee.
