Urbana, IL May Enact New Business License Ordinance

City Officials met on Monday, May 9, 2011 to discuss the proposed hotel-motel business license. If passed all 17 hotels and motels in the area would have to purchase an annual hotel/motel business license. The fee each year would be $150.00.

City officials claim that by establishing the license they will now have a means of staying in control of living conditions in the hotels. To get the license, owners of the lodges would have to comply with the upkeep guidelines determined by the city, such as having the grounds clean and the facilities in working order.

According to The News-Gazette, an evacuation last year of the Hanford Inn and Suites, where smoke detectors were found to be defective or missing, and a 2009 shuttering of the Gateway Studios in Champaign, where residents had settled in for extended stays in deteriorating conditions, have shown how things can go wrong.

"When you are having trouble with compliance, it is something the city can pull or withhold," director of community development Libby Tyler said.
