State revenuers have arrested the owner of a recently closed Summerville barbecue restaurant, charging him with operating without a business license.
The S.C. Dept. of Revenue (DOR) announced Thursday it arrested William Percy Kelly, Jr., owner of Kelly's BBQ in Summerville.
Kelly, 56, is charged with one count of operating a business without a valid license, DOR officials say . If convicted, Kelly faces up to $200 in fines and the possibility of 30 days in jail.
The DOR says it revoked Kelly's retail business license for his restaurant after he allegedly failed to file sales and corporate tax returns, and also reportedly failed to remit sales and withholding taxes.
Revenuers twice cited Kelly for operating without a license after warning him of the penalties he would face, the DOR says.
Kelly's BBQ announced it was closing the restaurant portion of its business in early November, but said it would continue catering.
In a statement posted at the time on social media and the restaurant's website, ownership said "After 41 years, we think its time to cut back a little and enjoy life."
Kelly was being held Thursday in in jail at the Dorchester County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
