Berlin Legislatures Propose Instituting Landlord License

At a council meeting last month, town leaders proposed instituting an ordinance that would mandate the purchase of a special landlord license by all town landlords, instead of the currently required general Berlin business license.

In order to qualify for the license, landlords would have to ensure that all their rental units comply with the town’s standards for multiple-dwelling housing. The license will give town officials a means of enforcing proper living conditions for local renters.

As Tony Russo writes in the Bayside Gazette, “The plan would then make it possible to enforce any new rules placed on rental homes by enforcing inspections annually for houses that do not meet the newly established code.”

Council members will further discuss the proposal at the work session next week Sunday.
