Black Mountain Privilege License Fee Hikes go into Effect

Black Mountain, NC privilege license fee hikes went into effect last week, with town officials mailing notices to business owners to let them know about the increased costs in obtaining local business licenses.

The Board of Aldermen approved the privilege license fee hikes in an effort to raise much needed funds for the town. Building and development fees, as well as garbage pickup fees were also increased.

The Citizen-Times reports that the cost for obtaining a local privilege license hasn’t been raised in the town for close to 15 years. Black Mountain charges a flat fee for business licenses, unlike most other localities whose business license costs are based on the businesses’ gross revenue.

“We looked at six other jurisdictions that still have flat fees,” Jennifer Tipton, the Town’s permits clerk and interim zoning administrator, said. “There are not many left. Most have gone to gross receipts (based on revenue). We tried to be roughly between everyone – not too high or too low. We’re right in the middle.”

Additional revenue generated by the increase in fees is expected to bring in a bit more than $2,000.
