Charleston County Employee Uncovers 180 Unlicensed Businesses

February 27, 2012

Tami Fralick, the manager of the Revenue Collections Department, has discovered that more than 180 local businesses have been operating without obtaining a Charleston, SC business license. Fralick uncovered this when comparing state sales tax reports to the county’s business license lists.

Upon discovery that the lists didn’t add up, Fralick did some more research to figure out which businesses hadn’t been filing for a county business license.

"These were mainly home occupied businesses," she said. "They are usually the ones our revenue inspectors wouldn't find on a sweep."

Follow-up with the businesses showed that most of them didn’t even know they were required to get a county business license. Many of them filed for a Charleston business license immediately upon being informed of their obligation.

ABC News reports that Fralick’s diligence netted the county an additional $10,000 in business license fees.
