Cottage Grove Officials Revoke Individual’s Solicitors License

Cottage Grove Board of Trustees revoked the solicitors license of a Southwestern Company salesman last week. The salespeople of Southwestern Company, a business selling an integrated learning system to families, are all college students who work independently and must acquire individual business licenses.

John Woolington, one of the company’s 3,000 salespeople, received a Cottage Grove, IL business license and began conducting sales in the village. However, shortly after he began selling products door-to-door, potential buyers began filing complaints about him. According to The Herald Independent, John Woolington was “inviting himself into homes to use restrooms and asking for food.”

Police warned Woolington to stop soliciting and then directed the case to the Board of Trustees for further action.

“This is not, I believe, appropriate behavior for someone to be allowed to solicit in the village,” Trustee Paula Severson said. “I would like to see revocation.”

Not only did village officials agree to revoke Woolington’s license, they also plan on informing neighboring villages and cities of their decision to ensure that proper caution would be taken before any other locality would issue Woolington a solicitors license.
