Decorah Creates Temporary Food Vendor Permits

City council members approved an ordinance Tuesday night that would create a Decorah temporary food vendor permit in addition to the city’s standard restaurant business license. The cost for the permit is $2 a day. City officials have agreed to run this permit as an experiment before issuing a permanent food vendors permit.

In order to qualify for the permit, food vendors must keep the area around their truck clean, provide enough trash disposal containers, and only park in specific, city-approved areas. Additionally, vendors must obtain written permission from the business directly adjoining the cart’s location and the vendor’s food menu must be approved by the city council.

Sarah Strandberg explains further regulations in The Decorah Newspapers, “Other guidelines include meeting requirements of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, providing proof of inspection by the Iowa Health Department, proof of current, valid food, restaurant license/permit and proof of state and federal tax identification number.”

City officials instituted the ordinance in response to a local resident’s request to establish a hot dog stand.
