Montgomery: Delinquent Business License Fee Payers could Face Prison Time

With close to $2 million in delinquent Montgomery business license fees and sales taxes owed to the city, the Mayor has warned business owners to pay up or face serious repercussions.

The city can legally revoke a business license from businesses who have failed to pay license fees and the municipal judge can penalize business owners by sentencing them to up to six months in prison time and/or fine them with up to $500 in penalties.

As an added incentive to convince business owners to pay up, the city has removed late-payment penalties and fines on delinquent license fees for those who remit payment by August 1, 2011. The 1% interest charge for each month in owed business license fees will not be waived.

“Our intention is not to put people in jail. Our intention is to collect the revenues that are due to the city of Montgomery," Mickey McInnish, senior staff attorney with the city's internal affairs division told a Montgomery Advisor reporter.
