Lyon County Commission Rejects Business License Fee Increase

The Board of Commissioners for Lyon County voted on Friday, June 3, 2001 to reject a proposal that would increase business license fees by $50.

The motion was suggested by Clerk-Treasurer Nikki Bryan who felt that the increase in license fees could help the Lyon County budget. Bryan compared Lyon County’s low licensing fees to the much higher ones of neighboring counties.

The license fees for Lyon County haven’t been changed in over 25 years and the proposed increase would mean less than 14 additional cents a day for each business.

Other board members rejected the proposal claiming that difficult economic times for small businesses would make even a small fee increase difficult to finance.

Commissioner Chuck Roberts said, as quoted in RGJ, his opposition on the increase is "more philosophical than monetary," noting, "It's not so much the money but the message," especially in light of some complaints that Lyon County isn't business friendly.

The city did however approve other fee changes including a reduction in the charge for electronic copies and a $20 search fee to be charged for recorded documents.
