Norfolk Cracks Down on Unlicensed Peddlers

February 21, 2012

City officials have taken a proactive step in ensuring that all peddlers selling goods in the city have acquired a Norfolk, VA business license. Officials of the Commissioner of Revenue's Office drive around the streets, especially during holiday seasons, looking for unlicensed peddlers.

As reported in 10 on Your Side, “Herb Barbour, of the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office, invited 10 On Your side to come along as he checked to make sure business owners have all the required licenses. He came across a young man selling flowers outside one shop. Barbour called the store owner to explain the law. ‘Because he's selling outside your shop, you'll need to have a peddler's license for him to set up here,’ said Barbour.”

While acquiring a Norfolk peddler’s license is expensive, an annual $500, incompliance with city business licensing regulations can be more costly; as if issued a summons, the peddler will have to pay court fees as well as the cost of the business license.

Business license compliance is mandatory on national, federal and local levels. Operating without proper state, county and city business licenses can cost business owners thousands in fines and penalties as well as needless aggravation and problems. Business owners are urged to take advantage of Business Licenses’ "Business License Compliance Package™"  which explains exactly which licenses, permits, and tax registrations are required for your business, ensuring license compliance on every level.
