Proposed Ordinance Would Impose Stricter Regulations on Maintaining One’s Aurora Pawnbroker License

At last night’s council meeting, Aurora aldermen proposed mandating the use of LeadsOnline electronic tracking system by local pawnbrokers and secondhand shop owners. If a pawnbroker would not comply with the regulation and record all new purchases online, he could lose his business license.

LeadsOnline would assist the police in tracking stolen goods. Pawnshop owners would include a copy of the photo ID of the seller of each item along with their electronic record of the item purchased.

To enforce the usage of the system, city officials will revoke the business license from any store owner who fails to use LeadsOnline. If an individual would continue operating his shop without a license, he could be taken to prison. “We hope to put some teeth into this ordinance,” Police Commander Paul Nelson said, quoted in The Beacon News. “If you’re running a dirty business in Aurora you’re either going to have to get clean or get out.”
