Redding Officials Retract Concession License Issued to Local Entrepreneur

An unemployed couple is incensed over the City of Redding’s retraction of their concession license which is necessary for the operation of their ice cream vending business.

Danny and Evelyn O’Brien had begun selling ice cream in the Kids Kingdom parking lot after obtaining the necessary Redding business licenses for this business venture. Another ice cream vendor at the park demanded that the O’Briens leave because they hadn’t obtained a Redding concession license.

The O’Briens hadn’t been aware of the requirement by the city for the concession license and as soon as they were told they needed one, they applied and received the necessary paperwork.

David Benda describes what happened next in Redding.com. “A week later, they got a letter from the city's Community Service Department saying a mistake was discovered in the agreement: All park concession services need a mobile, free-standing cart which can be moved into the Redding park and/or trail areas away from parking lots and vehicle traffic.’" Meaning, the city suspended the O’Briens’ concession license until they can purchase a costly vending cart.

The O’Briens are sure that it was the competitor at the park who started up with them in the first place, that got city officials to retract their concession license. Although the city agreed to refund the amount paid for the business licenses, the O’Briens are more concerned about all the money invested in their ice cream venture.

Residents are rallying behind the O’Briens as they publicize what they feel is an injustice played out to them by the local authorities.
