Roseville City to Increase Alarm Permit Fees

In an effort to put a muzzle on the number of false alarms sounded by individuals and businesses in the City of Roseville, California, city officials approved an ordinance to increase alarm permit fees. The cost for obtaining a new alarm permit will go up from $30.00 to $35.00 with an annual $5.00 renewal fee.

Additionally, council members increased the fines for sounding false alarms. Whereas in the past there was a $50.00 charge once an individual sounded three false alarms, the cost increased now to $60.00 for the second false alarm, $85.00 for the third and $100.00 for the fourth.

Officials are hopeful that the increased costs for sounding the alarm will help people manage their systems better.

Responding to burglary and robbery alarms has cost the city more than $100,000.00 in 2010. Of the approximately 3,300 alarm calls that have come in so far this year, 99% of them were false alarms. The fees previously charged came in woefully short of the costs involved in responding to the alarms.

According to The Press Tribune, with the new fees in place, “the Police Department expects to recover about $200,000 annually.”
