Salt Lake Tightens Landlord Business License Regulations

September 8, 2011

It will now be a bit tougher, or more expensive, for landlords to obtain Salt Lake City, UT business licenses.

In an effort to reduce the crime rate in the close to 40,000 rented units in the city, officials launched a Landlord/Tenant Initiative Program.

Landlords now face the choice of either enrolling in the Landlord/Tenant Initiative Training and receiving their business licenses at the reduced rate of $20 per unit, or pay the non-participating licensing fee of $342.00 per unit. City officials are hoping that the program will help eliminate code violations and public nuisances while controlling and preventing illegal activity on rental properties that impact the quality of life within local neighborhoods.

All landlords will now have to obtain a Salt Lake City business license - as opposed to the previously required licensing by owners of 3 or more units.

Katie Drake reports in the Salt Lake Tribune, “Landlords with less than three units will need to get licensed in September, Mary Beth Thompson, revenue manager with Salt Lake City, said, while those with existing licenses can wait until they are up for renewal.”
