San Bernardino Councilman Found to be Operating Unlicensed Business

Business license regulations can be so complicated that even a city councilman didn’t get them right. Councilman Fred Shorett had been operating a home business doing commercial printing and packaging for four years without obtaining the necessary San Bernardino, CA business license.

Shorett claims that he had no idea that a home business was required by city regulations to register for a local business license. A complaint made by City Attorney James F. Penman prompted the investigation that ended with a $240 charge in past fees and late penalties for operating an unlicensed business.

The Sun quotes Deputy District Attorney John Goritz having written in a letter about Shorett, "Once the matter was brought to his attention, he admitted the lapse and promptly took steps to remedy the situation by obtaining the required certification and paying back fees for the years he was not in compliance.”
