Will Sellers of Scrap Metal be Required to Get a Business License in Cincinnati?

February 14, 2012

In an unprecedented move, Cincinnati City Council’s Public Safety Committee has proposed an ordinance that would require of not only buyers, but also sellers of scrap metal, to obtain a Cincinnati, OH business license.

With the rise of scrap metal theft across the nation, many localities have taken measures to curb the sale of scrap metals obtained illegally. Many of those regulations include a stipulation that require the owners of scrap yards to obtain a city business license. In order to acquire the business license, owners of scrap yards have to comply with city regulations that try to limit the sale of illegally obtained scrap metal.

The ordinance proposed by the Cincinnati City Council is unique in that it would also require sellers of scrap metals to obtain a business license. This would mean that any citizen that would like to sell useless scrap metal from his home would have to obtain a city business license.

The Cincinnati scrap metal business license would cost between $100 to $400.

Charlie Winburn expressed his disapproval of the proposed ordinance in Cincinnati.com, “Council members believe that the ordinance will ultimately curtail scrap metal theft in the community by holding thieves and scrap yards more accountable. However, it will only encourage citizens in Cincinnati to sell scrap metal to recyclers outside of the city, costing the city numerous jobs and lost revenues to Northern Kentucky and Indiana.”
