Will Vendors Need Business Licenses in Santa Monica?

March 27, 2012

A misunderstanding in the municipal code has allowed vendors to get away with paying Santa Monica, CA business license fees for years. City council members would like to change that so they are calling for a revision to the city’s business license ordinance.

City councilors are expected to meet and discuss the different aspects of reinstating the requirement for a Santa Monica vendors license at a council meeting. If approved, farmers would have to get a business license as early as July of 2012.

Santa Monica Daily Express reports that local farmers have expressed disapproval to the proposed requirement. "I'm totally against it," said Kanji Yasutomi, owner of Yasutomi Farms. "Should we have to buy business licenses for every market we attend? That would cost quite a bit."

If passed, the requirement of a vendors license would generate for the city $18,000 in additional annual revenue.
