‘After-Hours’ Business License Ordinance Passed in Jefferson City

March 15, 2012

Business license regulations aren’t only a means used by local governments to increase their revenue. Many city and state officials use the necessity of obtaining a business license as a way of enforcing safety regulations.

Jefferson City council members have passed an ordinance last week aimed at protecting the safety of local residents by threatening to revoke the business license of local businesses who don’t comply with city protection requirements.

Any local business that remains open between the hours of 1:30 and 4:00 A.M. and fails to abide by the fire department’s safety requirements will lose their Jefferson, MO business license.

The News Tribune reports that Thomas Johnson, the owner of Club Motivation, has hired Attorney Samuel Trapp to protest the new business license ordinance, claiming that it was intended as a racial attack against his business specifically.

Council members ignored this notion and Trapp’s threats to take the matter to court when passing the ordinance.
