Aurora May Institute Tattoo Shop Business License

City officials discussed the possibility of instituting an Aurora, IL tattoo license in an effort to regulate the growing number of tattoo shops in the area.

In order to obtain the tattoo license, shop owners would have to provide a copy of an Illinois Department of Public Health registration and a certificate of compliance with the county health department.

The Beacon-News details further regulations that would have to be followed by owners of tattoo shops.

“Licensees would have to identify everyone working for the business, provide training documentation, operation procedure for response to a medical emergency, previous employment, past criminal convictions, at least $100,000 in malpractice insurance and a statement to the city from the shop’s licensed physician on call.”

The cost for obtaining an Aurora tattoo license would be an initial $750 when applying for the license the first time, and an annual $250 to renew the business license. This is in addition to the annual $500 tattoo shops must pay to acquire a State of Illinois business license.

Council members will vote on the business license ordinance at their next council meeting on March 27, 2012.
