Challis may Institute City Business License

February 13, 2012

At the Chamber of Commerce meeting last week, Mayor Mark Lupher suggested instituting a Challis, ID business license ordinance. Many other neighboring Idaho cities have recently mandated the need to obtain a city business license.

Lupher feels that a city business license will help protect both citizens and business owners from fly-by-nights. As the Challis Messenger quotes Mayor Lupher having said, “Other eastern Idaho cities like Idaho Falls and St. Anthony are considering or have adopted business licenses because they recently had problems with unscrupulous magazine salesmen, some of whom were ex-convicts, forcing themselves into people’s homes.”

Business license applications provide critical information about the owner and operator of every city business. In cases of illegal activity, police officials can use that information to track the perpetuators of crime.

Before going ahead with the business license ordinance, Lupher suggested that local business owners come forth and give their opinions about the idea.

With constant changes to business license regulations across the nation, large companies can oftentimes find that they have not complied with a locality’s new law or regulation. Incompliance can cost companies thousands of dollars in late fees and penalties.
