Columbia Repeals Special Business License Tax

January 23, 2012

Downtown businesses were relieved to hear that the special tax they’ve been paying for years as part of their Columbia, MO business license fees, was repealed by council members last Tuesday, January 17, 2012.

Until now, downtown business owners had to pay 50% more on business license fees than their contemporaries in other parts of the city. Business owners felt strained by the extra financial burden while city coffers didn’t benefit too much from the extra $20,000 in revenue bought in by the special tax.

Columbia Missourian reports that the main purpose in repealing the tax was to help cut costs for downtown businesses.

"With the repeal of this tax, we're trying to keep from nickel-and-dime-ing our guys," Carrie Gartner, executive director of the improvement district said. "If you're a small business owner, there are a bunch of little things you have to pay for. Those little things add up and can all-together become a hassle."

City officials hope that the lower costs in setting up a business will attract more new businesses to the downtown district.
