Corvallis City may Impose Business License Fees

As part of a greater effort to bridge the $1 million gap in city revenue for next calendar year, council members have discussed instituting a Corvallis, OR business license tax.

With a business count close to 2,000, community leaders are hoping that a business license tax would generate up to $360,000 in city funds each year.

At a council meeting last week community leaders discussed the different taxing options. Nancy Raskauskas writes in The Gazette Times, “The fee could be based on number of employees, percentage of net income or a set dollar amount per business.” While a charge of $10 per employee would bring in close to $250,000 a flat rate fee per business could bring in more.

Although a previous attempt to impose business license fees was thwarted in 2008, city officials hope that the proposal will have greater success this time.
