Cumberland Raises Business License Threshold

February 27, 2012

$30 may seem like a paltry sum of money in today’s world, but to people who are struggling to earn funds for basic necessities; $30 can feel like a lot of cash to shell out for a county business license. At the behest of County Administrator Judy Ownby, county supervisors agreed to raise the Cumberland, VA business license threshold from $3,000 to $10,000 thereby cutting out the obligation of low-earning businesses to purchase a county business license.

As Supervisor Lloyd Banks, District Two said. "I don't believe it's a matter of if you're operating a business-I think it's a matter of whether you have income. I know of constituents in my district who are simply babysitting or cutting grass or what have you and they have to come down and purchase a business license. It's certainly not a license to conduct business-it's simply a tax.”

Many of these small businesses may now be exempt from paying the county business license fee as long as their gross receipts are less than the $10,000 threshold.

The Farmville Herald reports that “According to information from the Commissioner of Revenue's office, raising the threshold from $3,000 to $10,000 would result in a loss of $3,960 from 132 businesses at $30 each based on 2010 revenues.”
