Exeter May Establish Second-Hand Business License

April 3, 2012

Second-hand business license regulations have been implemented in many parts of the country for help in tracking stolen goods that oftentimes land up in pawn shops. Exeter police feel that a business license ordinance aimed at second-hand shops would help curb the rising number of untracked stolen goods.

If passed, all local pawnshop owners and second-hand brokers would have to obtain an Exeter, NH business license and agree to abide by the city’s regulations. For example, pawnbrokers would have to fill out transaction forms for each purchase and sale and keep copies of the seller’s ID as well as relevant information about the seller and the transaction.

SeaCoastOnline reports that business owners haven’t expressed a positive reaction to the proposed ordinance. “Some business owners feel the ordinance isn't necessary, while others feel it would create an extra burden for them.”

The details of the ordinance are still up for discussion by city leaders.
