Layton Amends Business License Ordinance

January 16, 2012

Council members have amended the current Layton, UT business license ordinance by dividing the mobile business license into six different categories. Regulations and fees will vary dependent on the category a business falls into.

The six new business licenses are the: kiosk business license, street vendor business license, tent vendor business license, snow shack business license, single event business license and seasonal outdoor vendor business license.

City officials feel that the new licensing categories will benefit business owners as it will clarify their requirements. City staff will also have an easier time regulating businesses once the business types are clearly defined.

Standard Examiner quotes Peter Matson, the city’s long-range planner, having said, “City officials and staff were concerned that previous standards did not adequately regulate temporary businesses. A small taco stand on the street had the same requirements as a Christmas tree lot, making it difficult to meet requirements, such as how much space was needed around the business.”

The new business license categories are slated to go into effect on February 3, 2012.
