Minnesota Government Shutdown Affects Business Licensing Process

The Minnesota government shutdown has impacted more than just government workers. Businesses across the state are now encountering difficulties with obtaining the necessary state business licenses/license renewals that would keep them from being shut down.

Nick Enderson, the owner of a new pizza store in Minnesota, had obtained all the necessary city of Moorhead business licenses and was about to open shop when he found out he needed a county business license. The government shutdown had closed the county’s licensing department, effectively preventing Nick from opening his store. Luckily, city officials helped him bypass the county’s licensing requirement and he was able to open shop yesterday.

As Ryan Peterson reports in Iowa State Daily,As the shutdown continues, business licenses have expired, forcing shutdowns. Liquor licenses have also expired, and many restaurant owners cannot renew them. Trucking company owners who need to license their trucks have no means of registering them.”

Most responsible business owners in Minnesota made sure to have their licenses updated before the shutdown took place. However, as time passes without a resolution in sight, business owners fear that they too may be forced to shut down if they cannot file the necessary business licenses.
