NGIA Requests Food Permit Increases

January 24, 2012

Across the nation, business owners have been petitioning for reductions in the fees and taxes associated with running their businesses. In a surprising twist of events, the organization that represents all facets of the food industry throughout Nebraska, the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association, has been lobbying for an increase in the Nebraska food permit fees.

While the organization is concerned about the financial constraints of their members, their primary concern is food safety. With a dearth of funds available to fund food inspection, NGIA members feel that the state’s food safety is at risk.

As Food Safety News quotes Kathy Siefken, executive director for the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association, having said, “She is willing to raise fees on her members to maintain food safety standards in Nebraska.”

In order to avoid any layoffs in the state’s 14 regional inspection offices, NGIA has proposed minor increases to the state food permit fees. If the proposal will pass, food businesses will have their Nebraska food permits increased $12 from $74 to $86. Annual inspection fees would only go up $6 from $37 to $43. Businesses paying late would face penalties of double the original charges.

The increases are expected to generate close to $90,000 in the next two years.
