No Business License Increases Planned for Orangeburg

City officials will review next year’s budget proposal at a council meeting today, August 2, 2011. Contrary to prior reports, the budget draft does not include increases on costs of obtaining Orangeburg business licenses.

Council members briefly considered raising local business license fees to offset the money lost by state funding cuts, as explained in an earlier post. City officials have found other means to generate more city funds, such as increasing the amount it receives from the city-owned Department of Public Utilities to $165,000.

Increasing late fees for business license renewals was another option raised. As Phil Sarata explained in The Times and Democrat, “council will be presented with an ordinance setting stiffer penalties for those who pay their business license fees late or don't pay at all”

If passed, the new budget proposal contains a surplus of around $375,000.
