Phenix City to Charge Landlords Business License Fees

The capital improvement project planned by the Phenix city council comes with a hefty price tag; cash that city coffers do not have. Imposing a Phenix business license tax on landlords is just one way of raising funds to finance the multi-million dollar venture.

Council members voted 3-1 last week to impose a 1.5 percent business license tax based on gross receipts of income made by local landlords. Rental owners will be expected to remit payment every three months. The new charge is expected to generate over $400,000 annually.

Although landlords were given a chance to voice their opinions on the new tax, council members disregarded their pleas for exemption from business license fees and instituted the tax contrary to rental owners’ wishes.

As Ledger Enquirer quotes Councilman Jimmy Wetzel, who has touted the city’s approach of asking a wide array of people to contribute a small amount to the projects, having said, “Every other business in town has to buy a business license.”

The business license tax goes into effect October 1, 2011.
