Richland Amends Business License Ordinance

March 14, 2012

Merchants who sell products outside of South Carolina will no longer have to pay Richland, SC business license taxes on the revenue of their out-of-state sales. County council members voted to do away with this aspect of business license charges at their council meeting on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

The council’s decision was much affected by a still-pending lawsuit filed by McEntire Produce and FN Manufacturing after the county changed their business license fee structure in 2007. McEntire Produce’s business license fees mushroomed from $480 to $34,420 and FN Manufacturing’s fees increased to $128,865.78 after having paid a business license fee of $254.90 for years.

TheState.com reports that although few county businesses will be affected by the amendment, only 45 out of 10,000 businesses, the county will lose $200,000 in annual revenue.
