Salt Lake County to Grant Business License Penalty Waivers

February 9, 2012

County council members unanimously agreed to grant penalty waivers to local businesses who can affirm that the cause of their delay in applying for a Salt Lake, UT business license was as a result of the change in the renewal system, rather than negligence.

The county changed their business license renewal system last year from an across-the-board annual renewal before January 1, to a staggering system. Although the county mailed out notices about this change, many businesses did not adjust their renewal systems to reflect the change. As such when they applied for a county business license at the end of the year, they were late in their submissions.

As the Salt Lake Tribune reports “The County Council decided this week to give those companies a chance to document their compliance history and to show that they missed last year’s deadline because the county changed the timing of its renewal process.”

Dependant on the amount of time that elapsed since the time of renewal, business license late fees can cost up to 100% of the original cost.

With constant changes to business license regulations across the nation, large companies can oftentimes find that they have not complied with a locality’s new law or regulation.
